COLD WEATHER IS HARD ON YOUR VEHICLE

Just as the cold weather can be hard on our bodies, it’s hard on our vehicles as well. Since hibernating until spring isn’t an option for us or our cars, here are some tips to help you and your vehicle better deal with cold weather and driving conditions.
Windshield Wipers:
Winter weather conditions can limit visibility. If your wipers blades are having a hard time keeping up with the rain, it’s only going to get worse with the frost or possible snow. Be sure and change your windshield wipers if they are past their prime or consider a winter weather blade to keep up with the current conditions.
Tire pressure:
Your vehicle’s tire pressure has a direct impact on the handling of your vehicle. A negative temperature change can constrict the air in your tires and reduce air pressure. Tire pressure can be affected each day as temperatures warm and cool throughout the day and night. Be sure to check your owner’s manual for proper PSI for your vehicle’s weight load and tires.
Battery:
Is your car starting slower than normal in the morning? Your car’s battery might be getting weak. Depending on the make and model of your vehicle, a battery life can average from 3-5 years. Dead batteries are the most common cause for vehicles not starting in cold weather; be sure to take preventative measures today to make sure you don’t get stranded.
Engine Coolant/Anti-Freeze:
Check your vehicle’s fluid level to prevent your engine and other components from freezing. If it hasn’t been flushed in a few years it’s a good idea to do so. Bellingham Automotive is here to help and offer coolant flush services. Green-colored antifreeze is the most common; whichever color you choose, don’t mix colors. Some mixtures are half water, half coolant and some are pure. Emergencies Preparedness:
Buy an emergency kit with cables, first aid kit, flares, and even a battery powered air compressor if it’s in your budget. All these things can prevent a minor inconvenience from becoming a major problem.
